Each way calculator

An each way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on your selection to win and one on it to place. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5, depending on the race and the bookmaker’s place terms.

What is in a Single

1 bets on 1 selection, placed twice: once to win and once to place:

Total1 × 2 (win and place)

Each way suits bigger prices in races with several places paid. At short odds the place part can return less than its own stake, so a placed favourite can still lose you money overall.

How the return is worked out

Each line is settled on its own: the line stake times the decimal odds of every selection in it, multiplied together. A losing selection makes every line it is in return nothing. A void selection counts as odds of 1.0. For each way bets the place part uses place odds: (decimal odds − 1) × place fraction + 1.

line return = stake × odds₁ × odds₂ × … and total return = sum of all line returns

Worked example

£1 a line each way at 1/5 place terms: A at 8/1 (placed). Total stake £2.00.

Not included: rule 4 deductions, dead heats, each way extra places and bookmaker bonuses (for example double odds on a single winner). Your bookmaker's settlement is final.

Questions

How is the place part of an each way bet worked out?

Place odds = (decimal odds − 1) × place fraction + 1. A £5 each way bet at 8/1 with 1/5 odds: place odds are 8 × 1/5 + 1 = 2.6, so the place part returns £13.

Does a £10 each way bet cost £10?

No, it costs £20: £10 on the win and £10 on the place.

What happens if my each way selection wins?

Both parts pay: the win part at full odds and the place part at the place fraction, because a winner has also placed.
